A 3T MRI of the shoulder is an MRI using a 3-tesla magnetic field, giving higher-resolution, faster images than lower-strength scanners. It enhances detection of rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, cartilage damage and bone marrow changes without radiation. The scan may use intravenous gadolinium for specific questions. It’s safe for most people but isn’t suitable with some implanted devices and can be noisy or claustrophobic.

A 3T MRI means the scanner’s magnetic field strength is three tesla, about twice that of common 1.5T machines. Higher field gives stronger signal and improved spatial resolution, often enabling faster scans or more detailed images. It increases sensitivity to small findings but can cause more artifacts and heating; implant compatibility and safety limits (like specific absorption rate) should be checked beforehand.

A new 3T MRI scanner typically costs $1–3 million, with high-end systems reaching $4–5 million. Refurbished 3T units can run about $500,000–$1.5 million. Site preparation, shielding and installation often add $200,000–$1 million, and annual service contracts range roughly $100,000–$300,000. Costs vary by country and vendor.

3T MRI provides higher signal-to-noise ratio, better resolution and faster scans—useful for brain, spine, joints and advanced sequences—but increases artifacts, heating and implant/compatibility limitations. 1.5T remains adequate for most exams, has fewer artifacts, broader implant safety and lower cost. The better choice depends on the clinical indication, patient safety/implants and available protocols rather than field strength alone.

Technicians can provide cushions, ear protection, or alternatives for claustrophobic patients.
