MRI Scan Pituitary

A pituitary MRI is a noninvasive imaging test using magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. It detects tumors, cysts, inflammation, empty sella or other structural changes. Often performed with a contrast injection to improve clarity, it is painless, takes around 15–45 minutes, and has specific safety considerations for implants and pregnancy.

Costs vary widely by country, facility and whether contrast/dynamic sequences are used. In the US an outpatient pituitary MRI with contrast typically ranges roughly $700–$3,500 without insurance (higher at hospitals). In the UK it's free on the NHS for eligible patients; private scans generally cost about £300–£1,000. In India private centers charge roughly ₹3,000–₹15,000. Insurance or public coverage often reduces or eliminates patient cost.

The optimal study is a dedicated sellar (pituitary) MRI: thin-slice (1–2 mm) T1-weighted images in coronal and sagittal planes, with intravenous gadolinium and dynamic contrast-enhanced sequences to improve detection of microadenomas. A 3 Tesla scanner offers better spatial resolution than 1.5T. This approach is standard for assessing pituitary lesions and surgical planning.

MRI is generally better for imaging the pituitary gland because it provides superior soft‑tissue contrast and high resolution, detecting small (micro)adenomas and stalk abnormalities; dedicated thin‑slice, contrast‑enhanced pituitary MRI is preferred. CT is less sensitive for small lesions but useful for bone detail, calcification, acute hemorrhage, or when MRI is contraindicated (e.g., certain implants or severe claustrophobia).

Early signs of a pituitary tumor often include persistent headaches and visual changes—especially loss of peripheral (side) vision or double vision. Hormonal symptoms may appear: menstrual irregularities, decreased libido or erectile dysfunction, unexplained fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, or abnormal milk production (galactorrhea). Small tumors can be asymptomatic, so medical evaluation is advised if several of these symptoms occur.

A pituitary MRI scan itself usually takes about 15–30 minutes. With setup, positioning, and safety checks expect 30–60 minutes total. If contrast (gadolinium) is used, the appointment may extend to 45–90 minutes to allow injection and extra sequences. Claustrophobia or additional imaging can lengthen time; follow your imaging center’s instructions.
