MRI Scan Perineum Contrast

A perineum MRI scan is a noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the perineal area (the region between the genitals and anus). It helps evaluate pain, trauma, infections, abscesses, fistulas, pelvic-floor dysfunction and tumors. Scans may use contrast, require lying still, and are not suitable for some people with certain metal implants or medical devices.

Costs vary widely by country and provider. In public systems MRI perineum scans are usually covered for eligible patients; private UK clinics typically charge about £150–£700. In the United States private MRIs generally range from roughly $400 to $3,000+ depending on facility, contrast use and region. In India private centres often charge about ₹2,000–₹10,000. Confirm price and whether contrast or specialist reporting is included.

A pelvic MRI with contrast is generally not painful. The MRI scan itself causes no pain, though lying still and the loud noises can be uncomfortable. The intravenous contrast injection may cause brief discomfort—a cold flush, stinging at the IV site, or mild nausea—and very rarely allergic reactions. Some people experience anxiety or claustrophobia; staff can offer cushions, ear protection, or mild sedation.

Pelvic MRI commonly uses intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) — typically macrocyclic chelates — to enhance vascularity and lesion characterization. Standard dosing is about 0.1 mmol/kg. Contrast is avoided or used cautiously in severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2) because of a rare risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Diffusion-weighted imaging can be diagnostic without contrast.

The perineum is the area between the anus and the genitals. It supports pelvic organs and contains muscles, connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves that help control urination and defecation, contribute to sexual sensation and function, and stabilize the pelvic floor. In childbirth it stretches and may tear or be surgically cut (episiotomy) to aid delivery.

Before an MRI with contrast you’ll be screened for metal implants, allergies, and kidney function and asked to remove metal and change into a gown. A small IV is placed for injection of gadolinium contrast during the scan. You may feel a cool flush or metallic taste. Remain still while images are taken for 20 to 60 minutes. Afterward you’re observed briefly for reactions and usually go home.
