MRI Scan Liver Estimation 3

A three‑phase liver MRI is a contrast‑enhanced study that acquires images before contrast and during arterial, portal venous, and delayed phases after intravenous gadolinium. Timed imaging (arterial ~20–30 s, portal venous ~60–70 s, delayed ~3–5 min) evaluates lesion enhancement patterns, vascular supply and washout to detect and characterize liver lesions such as hepatocellular carcinoma, metastases, and focal nodular hyperplasia.

Grade 3 (severe) fatty liver is often suspected with fatigue, right‑upper‑quadrant discomfort or hepatomegaly and abnormal liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT). Definitive detection relies on imaging: ultrasound shows marked diffuse echogenicity with poor visualization of diaphragm/portal veins; CT/MRI quantify fat. Noninvasive elastography (FibroScan/CAP) assesses steatosis/fibrosis; liver biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis and staging.

MRI can detect many liver problems. It provides detailed images to identify and characterize tumors, cysts, focal fat, steatosis, cirrhosis, iron overload, inflammation and bile-duct disorders (MRCP). MRI is non‑ionizing, often uses contrast for better lesion characterization, and complements ultrasound or CT when clarification or staging is needed. It’s commonly used for precise tissue or biliary evaluation.

RADS 3 on a liver CT (LI-RADS 3) denotes an indeterminate lesion with an intermediate probability of hepatocellular carcinoma in at‑risk patients. It is not diagnostic for cancer. Typical management is closer surveillance or additional imaging (contrast MRI or short-interval follow-up CT) and clinical correlation; biopsy or treatment decisions depend on lesion size, growth, and individual risk factors.

A 3T MRI (3-tesla MRI) is an MRI scanner with a 3-tesla magnetic field—about twice the strength of standard 1.5T systems. It yields higher signal-to-noise, allowing sharper images or faster scans, useful for brain, spine, musculoskeletal and vascular studies. Safety considerations include stronger magnetic effects, careful implant compatibility checks, and potentially higher tissue heating (specific absorption rate).

A liver MRI scan typically takes about 20–40 minutes for the imaging itself. If intravenous contrast is used, the scan and contrast phases usually take about 30–60 minutes total. Allow extra time for registration, changing clothes and explanation (often 30–90 minutes for the whole appointment). Exact duration varies by facility, protocol and whether additional sequences are needed.
