MRI Scan Leg

MRI of the legs provides detailed images of bones and surrounding soft tissues — muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and joint spaces — and can detect muscle tears, tendon injuries, ligament sprains, joint degeneration, bone marrow changes, stress fractures, infections, tumors, cysts and inflammation. MR angiography can assess blood vessels and detect vascular narrowing or clots. It helps guide diagnosis and treatment planning.

An MRI of the leg is generally not painful. The scan uses magnets and radio waves, so you shouldn't feel anything inside the body. Discomfort can come from lying still, confined space, loud noises, or the brief sting of an injected contrast dye. Staff can provide ear protection, cushions, communication, and offer sedation or open MRI options for anxiety or discomfort.

An MRI of the lower leg typically costs about $400–$3,000 in the United States (higher with contrast), about £200–£700 privately in the UK (free through public healthcare), and roughly ₹2,000–₹8,000 at private clinics in India. Final price depends on location, facility type, use of contrast, radiologist fees, and whether insurance or public coverage applies.

A full leg MRI typically requires about 30–60 minutes of actual scanning. Time varies with the specific region imaged, number of sequences, use of contrast, and patient factors (movement, claustrophobia). Allow extra time for registration, changing and positioning—usually 15–30 minutes—so expect the entire appointment to take roughly 45–90 minutes.

MRI can visualize structural causes of leg nerve compression—herniated discs, tumors, or spinal stenosis—and with MR neurography may show nerve swelling or signal changes indicating injury. Conventional MRI is less sensitive for small axonal damage or purely functional loss; electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/NCS) are often needed to assess nerve function and injury extent. You can wear pants to a leg MRI if they contain no metal (zippers, buttons, rivets) and are comfortable and nonrestrictive. Many centers will provide a gown or ask you to change if clothing has metal, heavy hardware, or metallic fibers. Remove jewelry, belts, and piercings, and inform staff about any implants or devices before the scan.
