An MRI of the left hip assesses bones, joint cartilage, labrum, ligaments, tendons, muscles and surrounding soft tissues. It can show osteoarthritis (cartilage loss, joint space narrowing, osteophytes), labral tears, femoroacetabular impingement, tendonitis or bursitis, bone marrow edema, stress or occult fractures, avascular necrosis, infection or tumors, and joint effusion. A hip MRI can reveal structural causes of nerve injury — nerve compression, entrapment, inflammation, masses, or muscle denervation changes — and specialized MR neurography improves nerve visualization. Electrophysiologic tests (EMG/NCS) complement imaging to assess nerve conduction and confirm functional impairment when MRI is inconclusive.

Simple scans (one body area) often last 15–30 minutes, while detailed studies, multiple regions, high-resolution imaging, or scans with contrast can require 45–90 minutes. Allow extra time for registration, changing clothes, and contrast administration.
