MRI Scan Jaw

MRI of the jaw visualizes soft tissues and joint structures, especially the temporomandibular joint (disc, cartilage, ligaments, muscles). It detects disc displacement and abnormal motion, joint effusion, inflammation, infection, bone marrow changes, tumors, cysts and post-traumatic tissue injury. MRI can assess nerve and vascular involvement and, with dynamic sequences, jaw movement. It is less detailed for cortical bone than CT.

A jaw (TMJ) MRI scan typically takes about 15–45 minutes of actual imaging. Including check-in, positioning and explanations, expect a total appointment time of roughly 30–60 minutes. If contrast dye is required or additional sequences are needed, the scan and recovery may add another 10–20 minutes. Talk with your imaging center for exact timing.

The optimal scan depends on the problem. For detailed dental and jaw bone imaging—implant planning, tooth position and small fractures—cone‑beam CT (CBCT) is preferred for high‑resolution, low‑dose bone detail. For temporomandibular joint soft tissues and disc evaluation, MRI is best. For major trauma or complex facial fractures, conventional medical CT provides fast, wide‑field bone assessment. Your clinician will choose based on symptoms.

An MRI of the jaw (TMJ) typically costs: United States $400–$3,000 (often $700–$2,000 with insurance adjustments); United Kingdom NHS is free, private scans about £150–£600; India ₹2,000–₹15,000. Final price depends on location, facility type, use of contrast, and radiologist/interpretation fees; insurance or national health coverage may reduce out‑of‑pocket cost. MRI can detect many bone problems by imaging bone marrow and surrounding soft tissues. It’s excellent for identifying marrow abnormalities, infections (osteomyelitis), tumors or metastases, occult or stress fractures, bone bruises, and avascular necrosis. MRI is less sensitive for cortical bone and small calcified details—CT or X‑ray may be better for cortical fractures or fine bone detail.

A routine brain MRI may incidentally capture parts of the temporomandibular joint, but it’s not optimal for diagnosing TMJ disorders because the study’s field-of-view and sequences aren’t targeted to the joint. Dedicated TMJ MRI (or CT for bone detail) with specific protocols best visualizes disc position, joint inflammation, and bony changes. Ask your clinician for a TMJ-focused study if TMJ problems are suspected.
