MRI of the elbow visualizes bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. It detects ligament tears (UCL/LCL), tendon injuries and tears, occult fractures and bone marrow edema, joint effusion, cartilage defects and osteochondral lesions, synovitis or arthritis, nerve entrapment (ulnar nerve), infections, and tumors. It helps guide diagnosis, surgical planning and monitoring of treatment response.

Costs vary by country, facility and use of contrast. In the United States an elbow MRI typically costs about $400–$3,000+ (many pay ~$1,000–$2,500 out‑of‑pocket). In the UK it’s usually free on the public healthcare system with referral; private scans run roughly £150–£500. In India private MRI prices commonly fall in the ₹2,000–₹8,000 range. Insurance or hospital referrals change patient charges.

An elbow MRI typically takes about 20–45 minutes. A basic scan without contrast is often 20–30 minutes, while more detailed studies or use of gadolinium contrast can extend to 30–60 minutes. Time varies with imaging sequences, patient movement, need for additional views, and setup/positioning. Allow extra time for preparation and post-scan instructions.

For an elbow MRI the arm is placed in a dedicated surface coil with the elbow centered and supported, usually slightly flexed (commonly about 30–90°) and the forearm in neutral to slight supination. Cushions and straps immobilize the limb to reduce motion. Exact positioning (degree of flexion and forearm rotation) varies by scanner and the clinical question to optimize views of bones, ligaments and tendons.

For most elbow pain start with plain radiographs (X‑rays) to rule out fracture, dislocation, or advanced arthritis. For persistent pain or suspected ligament, tendon, cartilage or occult bone injury, MRI is the best single scan because it shows soft tissues, bone marrow and cartilage. Ultrasound helps with dynamic tendon assessment and guided procedures; CT defines complex fractures.

MRI can detect many bone problems by visualizing bone marrow and surrounding soft tissues. It identifies fractures (including occult/stress fractures), bone infections, tumors, marrow edema and inflammatory or degenerative changes. MRI is superior for marrow and soft-tissue assessment but less sensitive than CT or X‑ray for fine cortical bone or calcified detail. Contrast-enhanced studies improve detection of infection or tumors.
