MRI Scan CV Junction

MRI of the craniovertebral (CV) junction images the region where the skull base meets the upper cervical spine (occiput, atlas C1, axis C2, and foramen magnum). It provides detailed views of bone, spinal cord, ligaments (transverse and alar), neural elements and soft tissues to detect congenital anomalies, Chiari malformations, tumors, infection, inflammatory disease, instability or traumatic injury and assess cord compression.

A cardiovascular (CV) MRI, or cardiac MRI, is a noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the heart and nearby blood vessels. It assesses heart structure, function, tissue damage, blood flow, and congenital or vascular abnormalities. It helps diagnose cardiomyopathies, ischemia, inflammation, and valve disease. The scan is radiation-free; sometimes contrast is used to improve visualization.

CV (craniovertebral) junction anomalies are seen with congenital malformations (basilar invagination, atlantoaxial dislocation, occipitalization), syndromes like Down and other skeletal dysplasias, connective‑tissue disorders, inflammatory disease (eg, rheumatoid arthritis), trauma, infections (osteomyelitis), and neoplasms. They may also arise from degenerative instability and post‑surgical changes, presenting with neck pain, neurological deficits, or myelopathy.

CV junction stands for craniovertebral junction. It refers to the anatomical region where the skull base (occiput) meets the upper cervical spine—primarily the atlas (C1) and axis (C2). This area contains critical neural and vascular structures; instability, congenital anomalies, trauma, or infection here can cause neck pain, neurological deficits, or compression of the brainstem and spinal cord.

Causes include congenital abnormalities (Chiari malformation, basilar invagination), trauma, degeneration, or inflammatory disorders. Patients commonly have neck pain, headaches, and neurological signs such as limb weakness, numbness, balance and coordination problems, plus swallowing or breathing difficulties. Diagnosis uses clinical assessment and imaging; treatment ranges from conservative management to surgery for instability or neural compression.

The three main types of MRI are: 1) Structural MRI (T1/T2) — detailed anatomical imaging to detect tumors, lesions, and structural abnormalities; 2) Functional MRI (fMRI) — measures brain activity via blood-oxygen-level–dependent changes; 3) Diffusion-weighted/Diffusion tensor imaging (DWI/DTI) — maps water diffusion to assess stroke and white‑matter tracts. Each uses different sequences to highlight anatomy, function, or microstructure.
