MRI SCAN BRAIN CONTRAST WITH PITUITARY PROTOCOL

An MRI with pituitary protocol is a dedicated MRI of the sella turcica and pituitary gland using high‑resolution, thin‑slice sequences and often intravenous gadolinium contrast. Dynamic contrast‑enhanced imaging and tailored planes improve detection of microadenomas, cysts, or other structural causes of hormonal dysfunction, headaches, or visual changes. It's ordered when pituitary disease or abnormal hormone tests are suspected.

Contrast (gadolinium) is generally required for pituitary MRI because dynamic, contrast-enhanced thin-slice imaging improves detection and characterization of microadenomas, cysts, and stalk lesions. Non-contrast scans can miss small lesions and are less reliable; contrast is usually used unless contraindicated (e.g., severe renal impairment or allergy), when alternative protocols or imaging may be considered.

A pituitary MRI with contrast usually requires about 20–30 minutes of actual scanning. With patient preparation, positioning, contrast injection and a few post-contrast sequences, plan for roughly 30–60 minutes at the imaging center. Total time can vary with scanner type, added sequences, or patient needs; your radiology team will provide a personalized estimate before the scan.

A pituitary MRI is a focused magnetic resonance scan that produces high-resolution images of the pituitary gland and nearby structures at the base of the brain. It detects pituitary tumors, cysts, structural abnormalities, and causes of hormonal imbalances or vision changes. Often done with intravenous contrast to enhance detail, it uses magnetic fields (no radiation), lasts about 20 to 40 minutes, and is contraindicated with some implants.

A doctor orders a pituitary MRI to look for pituitary tumors or lesions that cause hormonal imbalances (e.g., prolactinoma, Cushing's disease, acromegaly), unexplained vision changes or visual field loss, persistent headaches, or abnormal pituitary hormone tests. MRI helps assess lesion size, extension into nearby structures, detect hemorrhage (pituitary apoplexy), differentiate tumor types, and guide treatment planning or surgical follow-up.

For a pituitary MRI: no special fasting—continue usual meds. Remove jewelry, metal-containing clothing, and makeup. Tell staff about pregnancy, implants (pacemaker, clips), allergies, or kidney disease—contrast (gadolinium) may require a blood kidney test and an IV. Expect to lie still; arrive early. If claustrophobic, ask about sedation or open MRI. Bring previous imaging reports.
