MRI Scan Angiography Neck

An MRI angiogram of the neck (MR angiography) is a noninvasive imaging test using magnetic fields and radio waves—often with gadolinium contrast—to create detailed images of neck blood vessels (carotid and vertebral arteries). It identifies narrowing, blockages, aneurysms, dissections, and vascular malformations without ionizing radiation. The scan requires lying still; contrast may be avoided with severe kidney problems or certain implants.

MRI angiography (MRA) is a noninvasive imaging test using magnetic resonance to visualize blood vessels and blood flow. It maps arteries and veins to detect narrowing, blockages, aneurysms, malformations, or vascular inflammation. MRA can be performed with or without intravenous contrast and avoids ionizing radiation. It’s used for brain, neck, chest, abdomen and limb vessel assessment; some implanted devices may be contraindications.

MRI can detect blockages in neck arteries when specialized sequences (MR angiography) are used: it shows narrowing, occlusion, or flow abnormalities in carotid and vertebral arteries. Routine brain MRI without angiography may not reliably quantify stenosis. Carotid Doppler ultrasound and CT angiography are commonly used alternatives. Discuss which test is best with your clinician based on symptoms and risks.

An MRI of the neck (cervical spine and soft tissues) visualizes vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerve roots, ligaments, muscles and major blood vessels. It detects herniated discs, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, inflammation, infection, tumors, lymph node or thyroid abnormalities, and bone marrow changes. MRI is best for soft-tissue detail; CT or X‑ray may better show fine bone fractures.

Neck MRI is generally painless. The scanner uses magnetic fields and sound, so you may feel no physical pain but can have discomfort from lying still, neck positioning, tight space (claustrophobia), and loud noises. If IV contrast is used you might feel brief warmth or a mild sting. Serious pain or complications are rare; tell staff about implants, allergies, or anxiety beforehand.

A neck angiogram visualizes the blood vessels in the neck—primarily the carotid and vertebral arteries—and reveals blockages or narrowing (stenosis), aneurysms, dissections, arteriovenous malformations, and abnormal blood flow to the brain. It helps assess stroke risk, guides decisions for interventions (stenting, surgery), and maps vessel anatomy and blood-flow dynamics for diagnosis and treatment planning.
