A face MRI provides detailed images of soft tissues—muscles, fat, salivary glands, nerves, blood vessels—and orbital structures, sinuses, and the temporomandibular joint. It detects tumors, inflammation, infections, abscesses, vascular malformations, nerve or muscle disorders, and evaluates trauma, congenital anomalies, and bone marrow changes. MRI helps plan treatment and guide biopsy or surgery by offering high-resolution, radiation-free soft-tissue detail.

Generally you should remove facial makeup before an MRI. Some cosmetics (eyeliners, mascaras, mineral or glitter powders) can contain metallic particles that may heat, cause skin irritation, or produce image artefacts. If removal isn’t possible, tell the MRI staff so they can advise. Always follow the imaging center’s instructions for safety and optimal image quality.

MRI angiography is generally safe and noninvasive, using magnetic fields instead of X‑rays. Most people tolerate it well; risks are rare but include allergic reactions or gadolinium-related complications in patients with severe kidney disease. Claustrophobia, noise, and incompatibility with some metal implants are possible. Inform your doctor about kidney problems, pregnancy, or implants so they can choose the safest imaging option.

An MRI of the face typically takes 15–45 minutes of scanning time, depending on the number of sequences and whether contrast (gadolinium) is used. With preparation, positioning and post‑contrast imaging the total appointment may be 30–90 minutes. Longer studies or combined face/brain protocols can extend scan time; discuss specifics and estimated duration with your imaging centre.

MRI can detect many causes of facial nerve damage— inflammation, compression, tumors, or contrast enhancement of the nerve— and high‑resolution MR neurography improves visualization. Very small peripheral fiber injuries or purely functional/early damage may not be visible; electrophysiological studies (EMG and nerve conduction) are often used alongside imaging to evaluate nerve function and prognosis.

MRI can identify skin and soft-tissue infections—showing edema, fascial involvement, abscesses and extension to deeper structures including bone (osteomyelitis). Contrast-enhanced MRI improves detection and helps distinguish abscess from cellulitis. It’s most useful when deep infection, complicated spread, or uncertain diagnosis is suspected; uncomplicated superficial skin infections are usually diagnosed clinically or with ultrasound.
