MRI Right (TMJ)

MRI of the temporomandibular joint shows detailed soft-tissue and bone changes: articular disk position and morphology (normal, displaced with/without reduction), joint effusion and inflammation, retrodiscal tissue abnormalities, marrow edema and degenerative/osteoarthritic changes of condyle and fossa, bone erosions or ankylosis, and surrounding muscle or ligament pathology. Scans often include closed- and open-mouth views to assess disk movement and joint function.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems are usually not a serious disease. Most cause jaw pain, clicking, and headaches and improve with conservative care including rest, soft diet, pain relievers, heat or ice, jaw exercises, night guards, or physical therapy. Rarely, persistent severe pain, progressive jaw locking, or markedly impaired eating needs specialist care or surgery. Seek urgent evaluation for severe pain, fever, numbness, or breathing or swallowing difficulty.

A TMJ MRI typically costs: in the United States about $400–$3,000 (commonly $700–$2,000); in the United Kingdom public systems often cover it but private scans run roughly £200–£700; in India prices often range ₹1,500–10,000. Costs vary by location, facility, use of contrast, single vs bilateral imaging, and insurance coverage — check local providers for exact quotes.

A TMJ MRI typically takes about 20–40 minutes for the scan itself; including preparation, positioning and image checks, the appointment usually lasts 30–60 minutes. Time varies with single versus bilateral imaging, the number of sequences, whether contrast is used and how still the patient remains. Your imaging center can give a precise estimate when you book.

TMJ diagnosis relies on clinical assessment (history, jaw range of motion, pain, joint sounds, muscle palpation) plus dental/occlusal examination. Imaging includes panoramic X‑ray and cone‑beam CT for bone, and MRI for disc position and soft tissues. CT or arthroscopy may be used for complex bony disease. Occasionally lab tests are done if inflammatory or systemic disease is suspected.

For TMJ, MRI best evaluates soft tissues—disc position, joint effusion, inflammation, and functional abnormalities. CT (including cone-beam CT) is superior for bony detail: fractures, osteoarthritis, and surgical planning. Choice depends on the suspected problem—use MRI for internal derangement or inflammatory disease, and CT when bone detail or trauma are the concern; CT involves radiation, MRI does not.
