A pelvic MRI produces detailed images of pelvic organs and structures—bladder, uterus, ovaries, cervix, prostate, rectum—plus pelvic bones, muscles, blood vessels and lymph nodes. It detects tumors, cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, inflammation, abscesses, infections, congenital anomalies and traumatic or post‑surgical changes. MRI is especially useful for soft‑tissue contrast, cancer staging, treatment planning and evaluating unexplained pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding.

Costs vary widely by country and facility. In the United States an uninsured pelvic MRI typically runs about $400–$3,000 (higher for contrast or advanced imaging); in India private centres often charge roughly ₹1,500–₹15,000; in the UK it’s free on the NHS but private scans are about £200–£600. Final price depends on contrast use, machine type and insurance—check local providers and your insurer.

Pelvic MRI is generally safe, but risks include claustrophobia, discomfort from lying still, and loud scanner noise. Gadolinium contrast can rarely cause allergic reactions or, in people with severe kidney disease, a serious condition called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Metal implants or foreign bodies may be unsafe or degrade image quality. Small risk of inaccurate results; pregnancy and implanted devices need special review.

Prepare by arriving early, wearing loose clothing and removing all metal or jewelry; you may be asked to change into a gown. Inform staff about implants, pacemakers, pregnancy or allergies. Blood tests for kidney function are needed if gadolinium contrast is planned. Fasting is usually not required unless contrast or sedation is used; bladder instructions (full or empty) vary—follow the centre’s directions. Bring prior imaging.

A pelvic MRI scan usually takes about 20–45 minutes for image acquisition. Including check-in, positioning, and any contrast injection, plan on 30–60 minutes total. Complex cases or additional sequences can extend scan time to about an hour or slightly longer. Ask your imaging center beforehand for exact timing and necessary preparation.

MRI can detect pelvic infection signs — soft‑tissue inflammation, fluid collections, abscesses, and bone marrow edema (osteomyelitis); contrast enhancement improves sensitivity. It often shows complications like tubo‑ovarian abscess or pelvic inflammatory disease. MRI cannot identify the specific organism, so laboratory tests, cultures or aspiration are usually needed. In some acute cases CT or ultrasound may be quicker or better for drainage guidance.
