MRI Parotid Gland

Yes. The parotid gland is well visualized on MRI because MRI gives excellent soft-tissue contrast. T1, T2, STIR and contrast-enhanced sequences show gland size, inflammation, cysts, tumors, deep‑lobe involvement and perineural spread. MRI helps characterize lesions and their extent; ultrasound and CT may complement MRI for stones or calcifications.

Typical parotid MRI protocol: localizer, axial and coronal T1-weighted images (pre-contrast), axial and coronal T2-weighted images with fat suppression or STIR, diffusion-weighted imaging with ADC maps, then intravenous gadolinium with fat-sat T1-weighted sequences in axial and coronal planes (with optional dynamic/delayed contrast series). Thin slices and coverage of parapharyngeal spaces are included.

Costs vary widely by country and facility. In India a parotid (head/neck) MRI typically costs about ₹2,500–15,000 (roughly US$30–200). In the UK private scans are often £200–£800. In the United States uninsured charges usually range from about $400 to $3,000+; insured patients’ out‑of‑pocket depends on coverage. An MRI of the parotid gland typically takes about 20–45 minutes. If contrast (gadolinium) is used or extra sequences are required, the scan may extend to about 60 minutes. Allow additional time for paperwork, positioning and any post-contrast checks, so the full appointment often lasts 30–90 minutes. Check with your imaging center for a precise estimate.

Ultrasound is the first-line imaging for parotid gland lumps—quick, low-cost, and good for superficial lesions and guided biopsy. MRI is preferred for deep‑lobe lesions, soft‑tissue characterization, and perineural spread. CT is useful for suspected calcifications, sialolithiasis, or bone involvement, and PET/CT aids staging. Fine‑needle aspiration cytology commonly complements imaging to guide management.

MRI offers superior soft‑tissue contrast and diffusion‑weighted imaging for assessing nodal composition and regional nodes (neck, pelvis) without ionizing radiation. CT is faster, widely available, and better for detecting nodal size, calcification, and chest/abdominal involvement. For metabolic activity and improved accuracy in staging malignancy, PET–CT is often preferred. Choice depends on location, clinical question, availability, and radiation concerns.
