A MR venogram (MRV) of the brain is a noninvasive MRI-based scan that visualizes cerebral veins and dural sinuses to detect blood clots, venous thrombosis, stenosis, or malformations. It uses specialized MRI sequences—sometimes with intravenous gadolinium contrast—to map venous blood flow. The test is painless, requires lying still, and carries low risk; contrast can rarely cause allergic or kidney-related effects.

An MRI is a general magnetic resonance imaging scan that produces detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bones and blood vessels using different pulse sequences. An MR venogram (MRV) is a specialized MR technique focused on visualizing veins and venous flow—often using contrast or flow-sensitive sequences—to detect thrombosis, stenosis or malformations. An MR venogram typically takes about 20–60 minutes for the scan itself. Non‑contrast studies may be shorter (around 15–30 minutes), while contrast‑enhanced or more detailed exams can require 30–60 minutes. Allow extra time for registration, positioning and IV placement, so expect the full appointment to range from about 30 minutes up to 90 minutes depending on the facility and imaging needs.

The purpose of magnetic resonance venography (MRV) is to noninvasively image veins to evaluate blood flow and anatomy. It helps detect venous abnormalities such as clots (deep vein thrombosis or cerebral venous sinus thrombosis), stenosis, occlusion, or malformations, and guides treatment planning and follow‑up. MRV is useful when ultrasound or CT are inconclusive or when detailed venous mapping is needed before intervention.

Recovery after a venogram is usually quick. Most people are observed for a few hours and can go home the same day. Mild pain, bruising, or swelling at the puncture site can last several days; avoid heavy lifting for 24 to 48 hours. If sedation was given, expect several hours of recovery and avoid driving for 24 hours. Serious complications are uncommon; follow your doctor’s instructions.

MRV results are often available quickly: images are reviewed immediately for emergencies, with preliminary findings sometimes given the same day. A finalized radiology report typically arrives within 24–72 hours. For routine outpatient scans, it may take up to a week depending on workload and whether additional review is needed. Your referring physician will discuss results and next steps once the report is ready.
