Measles IgG Antibody

Measles IgG is a specific immunoglobulin G antibody produced after measles infection or vaccination. Its presence in blood indicates past exposure or immunity and typically develops within weeks, persisting for years to provide protection. Laboratory IgG testing helps confirm immunity or prior infection; a positive IgM result, in contrast, suggests recent or acute measles.

A positive IgG antibody test indicates your immune system has previously encountered the specific pathogen or antigen—from past infection, vaccination, or rarely passive transfer—and has produced longer‑lasting antibodies. It generally suggests some immune memory but does not confirm active infection, guaranteed protection, or how long immunity lasts. Interpretation depends on timing, clinical history, and test type; discuss results with your healthcare provider.

The IgG antibody test for MMR is a blood test that detects IgG antibodies to measles, mumps, and rubella. It determines whether someone has immunity from past infection or vaccination. It’s used before pregnancy, for healthcare workers, or after exposure. A positive IgG suggests protection; a negative or low result indicates susceptibility and may prompt vaccination or further evaluation.

A negative measles IgG result means no detectable protective IgG antibodies, so the person is likely not immune and is susceptible to measles. It can reflect lack of vaccination, waning immunity, or testing before antibodies developed after recent vaccination. Management often includes MMR vaccination if indicated, repeat testing after seroconversion time, or post‑exposure immunoglobulin for high‑risk contacts per clinical guidance.

IgM is the first antibody produced in acute infection, usually a pentamer that strongly activates complement but has lower affinity. IgG appears later after class switching, is a monomer with higher affinity and memory B-cell support, provides longer-term protection through neutralization and opsonization, can cross the placenta, and persists longer than IgM.

There is no specific antiviral for routine measles; the best treatment is supportive care: rest, fluids, fever control with paracetamol or ibuprofen, and vitamin A for all children with acute measles to reduce complications. Monitor and treat secondary infections (antibiotics), provide oxygen if needed, isolate to prevent spread, and hospitalize severe or high‑risk cases.
