MCHC TEST

MCHC test measures mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in red blood cells, indicating how much hemoglobin is packed into each cell. It helps diagnose and classify anemias (e.g., iron-deficiency, spherocytosis), monitor treatment response, and investigate abnormal CBC results. Abnormal MCHC values guide further testing and management by distinguishing hypochromic versus normochromic conditions.

Low MCHC means red blood cells have less hemoglobin than normal (hypochromia), commonly due to iron‑deficiency anemia, chronic blood loss, or thalassemia. It can cause fatigue, pallor, and weakness. Your clinician will confirm with a full blood count and iron studies (ferritin, transferrin) and treat the cause—often oral iron or managing the underlying condition; severe cases may need specialist care.

It's better to have MCH within the normal range; both high and low values indicate problems. Low MCH suggests microcytic anemia, often from iron deficiency or thalassemia. High MCH suggests macrocytic anemia, from B12/folate deficiency, liver disease, alcohol use, or certain medications. Abnormal MCH warrants further evaluation and treatment by a healthcare professional.

High MCHC means increased hemoglobin concentration in red cells. It commonly indicates spherocytic hemolysis (hereditary spherocytosis or autoimmune hemolytic anemia) or can be an artifact from cold agglutinins or lipemia. You’ll need further tests—blood smear, reticulocyte count, Coombs, haptoglobin, bilirubin—to find the cause. Treatment targets the underlying condition (steroids, splenectomy, supportive care).

Low MCHC (hypochromic anemia) is most often from iron deficiency due to chronic blood loss or poor absorption. Cancers that can cause this include colorectal, gastric and esophageal cancers, uterine/endometrial or cervical cancers with bleeding, and some urinary tract tumors. Malabsorption from gastric or pancreatic cancers and, less commonly, marrow‑infiltrating malignancies (leukemia, lymphoma, metastatic solid tumors) may also lower MCHC.

Stress by itself rarely directly lowers MCHC. However, chronic or severe stress can lead to poor diet, altered menstrual patterns, inflammation, or chronic illness that contribute to iron‑deficiency or anemia of chronic disease, which often cause low MCHC. If your MCHC is low, see a clinician for evaluation (CBC, iron studies, inflammation markers) and appropriate treatment.
