What is a Magnesium Test?

This test measures the amount of magnesium in your blood. Magnesium is a mineral your body uses for nerve and muscle function. It also helps keep your heart rhythm steady and supports bone health. Doctors check magnesium to find low or high levels that can cause symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness, or abnormal heartbeats. Abnormal results can point to kidney problems, poor diet, alcohol use, certain medications, or gut conditions that affect absorption. Physicians use the test to diagnose imbalances, guide replacement therapy, and monitor patients on diuretics or with kidney disease. Foods rich in magnesium include leafy green vegetables (spinach, Swiss chard), nuts and seeds (almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds), legumes (black beans, lentils), whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, oats), fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), tofu, avocados, bananas and dark chocolate. Including these regularly supports bone, muscle and nerve function and helps maintain normal energy metabolism.

Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function, energy production, and bone health. It helps regulate heart rhythm, blood pressure, and blood sugar, and contributes to protein synthesis, DNA/RNA production, and electrolyte balance.
