What is a Luteinising Hormone (LH) Test?
This test measures the level of luteinising hormone (LH) in the blood. LH is a key reproductive hormone made by the pituitary gland. It helps control ovulation in people with ovaries and stimulates testosterone production in people with testes. Measuring LH helps doctors evaluate fertility, irregular menstrual cycles, delayed or early puberty, and menopausal status. Abnormal LH levels can point to conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, hypogonadism, pituitary disorders, or menopause. Doctors use LH together with other hormone tests and clinical symptoms to diagnose problems and guide treatment like fertility care, hormone therapy, or further imaging.
