A negative PCR does not exclude infection, especially after antibiotics or outside the optimal sampling window.

A Leptospira positive result means laboratory detection of Leptospira bacteria or antibodies, indicating infection (leptospirosis). It can cause flu-like symptoms—fever, muscle pain, headache—and in severe cases jaundice, kidney or liver dysfunction, and bleeding. Transmission is usually via contact with contaminated water or animal urine. Prompt medical assessment and antibiotic treatment are important; follow-up depends on severity.
