LE Cells

An LE (lupus erythematosus) cell is a neutrophil or macrophage that has engulfed denatured nuclear material (a “hematoxylin body”) from another cell. It reflects antinuclear antibody–mediated opsonization and was historically used as a diagnostic marker for systemic lupus erythematosus. The LE cell test is now largely obsolete, replaced by sensitive immunological tests such as ANA and anti-dsDNA assays.
