What is a I.V.P. (5 Plates) Test?
I.V.P. (intravenous pyelogram) is an X-ray exam that uses injected contrast dye to show the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It measures the shape, size, and how well urine flows through the urinary tract. Multiple X-ray images are taken over time to follow the dye as it moves. This helps reveal blockages, kidney stones, tumors, strictures, and congenital differences. Doctors use IVP to investigate blood in the urine, persistent flank pain, repeated urinary infections, or unexplained kidney test changes. The test can guide treatment, assist surgical planning, and monitor recovery after injury. Patients are screened for allergies and kidney function before dye is given because the contrast has risks.

Abnormal results may come from infections, stones, tumors, scar tissue, or reduced kidney function, and some medications can affect findings. A family history of urinary tract problems may make this test more important.
