HRCT Scan Temporal Bone

High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the temporal bone is a specialized CT scan using very thin slices and detailed reconstruction to visualize tiny bony ear structures. It shows the outer, middle and inner ear (ossicles, cochlea, semicircular canals), mastoid air cells and facial nerve canal. Commonly used for hearing loss, cholesteatoma, trauma, congenital anomalies and preoperative planning; involves brief X-ray exposure.

A temporal bone CT scan provides detailed images of the ear’s bony structures to evaluate causes of hearing loss, chronic or recurrent ear infections (including cholesteatoma and mastoiditis), temporal bone fractures, congenital malformations, ossicular chain disruption, and tumors. It’s used for facial nerve canal assessment and surgical or cochlear implant planning, helping guide diagnosis and treatment by revealing fine bony anatomy not seen on regular CT.
