Contrast dye is not routinely required for high‑resolution CT (HRCT) of the temporal bone. HRCT is optimized for fine bony detail and pneumatization without IV contrast. Contrast may be used when evaluating soft‑tissue masses, suspected vascular lesions, or complicated infections where enhancement aids delineation; in such cases MRI is often preferred for soft‑tissue characterization.

HRCT temporal bone is a high-resolution CT scan that produces detailed, thin-slice images of the temporal bones and inner ear structures. It evaluates bony anatomy for causes of hearing loss, infection, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, trauma or congenital malformations, and aids surgical planning. The painless, quick exam usually requires no contrast; it exposes you to a small amount of radiation.

High‑resolution temporal bone CT is usually performed without intravenous contrast because it best shows fine bony detail (ossicles, cochlea, fractures, mastoid air cells). Contrast is reserved when soft‑tissue characterization or vascularity is required — for example, suspected tumors, aggressive infection with intracranial extension, or vascular lesions — or when CT findings need further differentiation from MRI.

HRCT disadvantages include higher radiation exposure than chest X‑ray, greater cost and limited availability, and reduced functional information compared with MRI or PET. Contrast use, when needed, carries allergy and kidney risks.

A non-contrast head CT is used to rapidly detect acute intracranial hemorrhage, skull fractures, large acute ischemic changes, hydrocephalus, mass effect and calcifications. It’s fast, widely available and avoids contrast risks such as allergic reaction or contrast-related kidney injury. Non-contrast imaging also provides a baseline before any contrast-enhanced study and is preferred in emergency evaluations like trauma or sudden severe headache.
