CBCT can be used in diagnosing TMD to evaluate bony structures—condylar morphology, joint space, erosions, osteophytes, fractures, and asymmetry. It does not reliably image the articular disc or soft tissues; MRI remains the gold standard for disc displacement and inflammatory changes. A sinus CT is optimized for the paranasal sinuses and may incidentally include parts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), revealing major bony changes. However, it’s not ideal for TMJ diagnosis: CT shows bone but not the disc or soft tissues. For suspected TMJ disorder, dedicated TMJ imaging (cone‑beam/maxillofacial CT for bone, MRI for disc/soft tissue) is recommended.
