Hepatitis Core Antibody IgM (Anti HBc - IgM)

Anti-HBc IgM positive indicates a recent or acute hepatitis B infection. It detects IgM antibodies to the virus core antigen, usually appearing in the first months after exposure and often signaling infection within about six months. It does not reflect vaccination or immunity. Additional tests (HBsAg, HBV DNA, liver enzymes) and clinical assessment are needed to confirm acute infection and guide management.

A positive hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) means you’ve been exposed to hepatitis B virus. It may indicate acute or recent infection, a past resolved infection (anti-HBc IgG persists), or—if isolated—the window period, low-level chronic infection, or a false positive. Further tests (HBsAg, anti-HBs, and sometimes HBV DNA) and clinician follow-up are recommended.

A positive hepatitis IgM indicates a recent or acute hepatitis virus infection—IgM is the early antibody produced soon after exposure. It suggests current or very recent infection (typically weeks to a few months) and often accompanies elevated liver enzymes and symptoms. Results need clinical correlation and sometimes confirmatory testing (viral PCR, other serology). Contact a healthcare provider for interpretation and follow‑up care.

Negative anti-HBc means no detectable antibody to the hepatitis B core antigen. Usually this indicates no past or current hepatitis B infection. Vaccinated people often have negative anti‑HBc but positive anti‑HBs. Exceptions include very early acute infection before antibodies appear, immunosuppression preventing antibody formation, or lab error. Interpret results along with HBsAg, anti‑HBs, and clinical context; consult a clinician if unclear.

Anti-HBc antibodies target the hepatitis B core antigen. Anti-HBc IgM appears early and indicates recent or acute infection (often during the acute phase and the “window” period), usually declining after months. Anti-HBc IgG appears later, persists long-term, and indicates past resolved infection or chronic carrier status. Interpretation requires other markers (HBsAg, anti-HBs) and clinical context.

Anti-HBc (core antibody) itself is not treated. Management depends on infection status: acute hepatitis B receives supportive care and monitoring; chronic HBV with active replication or liver damage is treated with antivirals (for example tenofovir or entecavir). Anti-HBc–positive people need regular liver tests and HBV DNA/HBsAg monitoring and may require antiviral prophylaxis before immunosuppression. Discuss care with a hepatology clinician.
