H. pylori IgA indicates a mucosal immune response and often appears earlier in infection, suggesting recent or ongoing infection; it is less persistent and less specific. IgG appears later, persists for months to years, and mainly indicates past or chronic exposure, so it cannot reliably distinguish active from prior infection. Active infection is best confirmed by breath, stool antigen, or biopsy tests.

H. pylori infection stimulates a mucosal immune response and often triggers production of IgA—especially secretory IgA in the gastric mucosa and specific anti‑H. pylori IgA antibodies. Serum IgA can be elevated in some patients but is variable and not a definitive diagnostic marker by itself. Diagnosis relies on specific tests (breath, stool antigen, endoscopy/biopsy, or serology with clinical evaluation).

When Helicobacter pylori is positive, the bacterium can cause chronic gastritis and increase risk of peptic ulcers, dyspepsia, and rarely gastric cancer or MALT lymphoma. Many infected people remain asymptomatic. Diagnosis is by breath, stool antigen, blood antibody tests or endoscopic biopsy. Standard treatment is combination antibiotic therapy plus a proton‑pump inhibitor to eradicate the infection and promote healing, with follow‑up testing to confirm clearance.

Helicobacter pylori IgG arises when the immune system produces IgG antibodies in response to H. pylori infection. Transmission typically occurs in childhood via oral–oral or fecal–oral routes, often linked to crowded living conditions, poor hygiene, or contaminated food and water. Household contact with an infected person raises risk. IgG can persist for months or years, so a positive test may reflect past or current infection.

If H. pylori is left untreated, it can cause chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation. Persistent infection raises risk of iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, and—rarely—gastric MALT lymphoma or gastric cancer. It also causes ongoing dyspepsia, so medical evaluation and eradication therapy are generally recommended.

IgG and IgA are two antibody classes with different roles. IgG is the most abundant in blood and tissue, provides long-term systemic immunity, neutralizes pathogens, opsonizes, and crosses the placenta to protect newborns. IgA predominates at mucosal surfaces and in secretions (saliva, tears, breast milk), preventing infection at entry sites. IgA is short-lived locally; IgG indicates past or systemic exposure.
