GCT 50gm Glucose Test

The 50‑gram glucose challenge test (GCT) is a screening for gestational diabetes, typically offered at 24–28 weeks. You drink a 50 g glucose solution (no fasting required) and have blood drawn one hour later to measure plasma glucose. If the result exceeds the screening cutoff (commonly 130–140 mg/dL), you are referred for a diagnostic oral glucose tolerance test.

A normal 50 g glucose challenge test (1-hour) is a plasma glucose level below 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L). Some clinics use a lower cutoff (130 mg/dL or 7.2 mmol/L) to increase sensitivity; values above the chosen cutoff prompt a diagnostic 3-hour oral glucose tolerance test to confirm gestational diabetes. Interpretation may vary by practice.
