Fibrinogen Degradation Product (FDP)

Fibrin degradation products (FDPs) are protein fragments released when plasmin breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen during clot breakdown. Elevated FDP levels indicate increased clot formation and fibrinolysis, seen in conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, disseminated intravascular coagulation, liver disease, or severe inflammation. FDP testing helps evaluate abnormal clotting and monitor treatment; D‑dimer is a commonly measured FDP.

Fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs) are fragments produced when plasmin breaks down fibrinogen and fibrin during fibrinolysis; D-dimer is a specific FDP from cross-linked fibrin. Elevated FDPs indicate active clot breakdown and occur with thrombosis (DVT, PE), disseminated intravascular coagulation, recent surgery, trauma, infection, liver disease or pregnancy. They aid assessment but need clinical correlation and further tests.

In disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), widespread activation of coagulation causes extensive fibrin formation in the vasculature. Secondary activation of fibrinolysis (plasmin) breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen, producing fibrin degradation products (FDPs) and D‑dimer. Elevated FDPs reflect accelerated fibrin turnover and impaired hemostasis; they also inhibit clot formation and correlate with severity of fibrin deposition and ongoing thrombolysis.

Fibrinolytic degradation products are fragments produced when plasmin breaks down fibrin and fibrinogen during fibrinolysis. They include fibrinogen/fibrin fragments (commonly termed X, Y, D, E) and the cross‑linked D‑dimer fragment. These circulating fragments indicate clot breakdown; their levels rise in thrombosis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hyperfibrinolytic states, and are used clinically as biomarkers of fibrin turnover.

A FDP disruption is a tear or avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon that flexes the finger’s distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. It often follows laceration or forced extension (jersey finger), causing loss of active DIP flexion, pain, swelling and possible tendon retraction. Diagnosis is clinical with imaging; treatment commonly requires timely surgical repair or reattachment, followed by splinting and rehabilitation.

Normal fibrin degradation product (FDP) levels are typically low — commonly reported as <5–10 μg/mL, though some laboratories use cutoffs up to ~20 μg/mL depending on the assay. Results vary by lab method and units; values above the reference range suggest increased fibrinolysis or clot breakdown and should be interpreted with clinical context and further testing.
