Doppler Penile

A penile Doppler is an ultrasound test that evaluates blood flow in the penis. After a vasoactive injection to produce an erection, Doppler imaging measures arterial inflow and venous outflow to diagnose causes of erectile dysfunction, such as arterial insufficiency or venous leak. It’s minimally invasive, performed by a radiologist or urologist, and provides real-time images and flow waveforms.

Penile Doppler is generally safe but carries small risks: pain or bruising at the injection site, hematoma, infection, allergic reaction to injected vasoactive drugs, lightheadedness or fainting, temporary numbness, and rare vascular injury. A rare but serious complication is priapism (a prolonged, painful erection) requiring urgent treatment. Discuss bleeding disorders or medications with your clinician beforehand.

Before a penile Doppler ultrasound: no special fasting is needed, but avoid PDE‑5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil) and recreational erection‑inducing drugs for about 48 hours. Inform the clinic about all medications, bleeding disorders or anticoagulants and any allergies. Empty your bladder, wear comfortable clothing, bring a medication list, and expect a possible local injection to induce an erection and extra appointment time.

A baseline penile Doppler ultrasound can be done without injection to assess anatomy and resting blood flow and to detect plaques. However, for evaluating erectile dysfunction, a dynamic study with an intracavernosal vasodilator injection is usually required to accurately measure arterial inflow and veno‑occlusive function; without injection the test is less sensitive and may miss functional problems.
