Dengue IgM positive indicates recent or acute dengue infection—IgM antibodies usually appear within days to weeks after symptoms and decline after a few months. Dengue IgG positive indicates past exposure or later-stage/secondary infection—IgG appears later, persists for months to years, and may confer partial immunity. Both IgM and IgG positive often suggest a recent secondary infection or late acute phase; results can cross‑react with other flaviviruses.

If both IgM and IgG antibodies are positive, it usually indicates a recent or ongoing infection transitioning to a developing immune response: IgM appears early, IgG appears later. Correlate results with symptoms and consider confirmatory PCR or antigen testing. Vaccination or prior infection can affect results. Consult your healthcare provider for interpretation, isolation guidance, and follow-up testing.

Rapid dengue tests are point‑of‑care immunoassays that detect dengue virus NS1 antigen (early infection) or dengue‑specific IgM/IgG antibodies (later stages). They use a small blood sample and provide results in about 15–30 minutes, aiding quick clinical decisions. NS1 is most useful in the first week; antibodies rise after ~5 days. Positive rapid tests often need laboratory confirmation due to variable sensitivity and specificity.

Test dengue IgM/IgG after the first few days: IgM typically becomes detectable about day 4–5 after symptom onset, peaking around two weeks and persisting weeks to months; IgG rises from about day 7–10 and persists long-term. For early illness (days 0–5) use NS1 antigen or PCR. Consider a paired convalescent sample (around day 10–14) to confirm seroconversion.

If your IgG is positive, it usually signifies past exposure or an immune response (infection or vaccination) rather than active disease. It can indicate some level of immunity, but interpretation depends on the specific test, timing, symptoms and medical history. If you have current symptoms, are immunocompromised, pregnant, or uncertain about what it means, consult your healthcare provider for follow-up and advice.

If you’re IgG-positive but well, no treatment is needed—IgG indicates past exposure and some immunity. If symptomatic or newly infected, care is supportive: rest, oral fluids, acetaminophen for fever/pain; avoid NSAIDs and aspirin due to bleeding risk. Get blood counts and medical follow-up; secondary infections can be more severe, so seek urgent care for warning signs (severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, dizziness, low urine output).
