Culture, Aerobic, Vaginal Swab

A culture (aerobic) or swab test report is a laboratory result showing organisms grown from a patient sample (wound, throat, skin, etc.) under oxygenated conditions. It lists any bacteria or fungi isolated, colony counts or growth level, and an antibiotic susceptibility profile (antibiogram). Clinicians use the report to determine if infection is present and which antibiotics are likely to be effective.

A vaginal swab is used to detect infections and abnormal organisms in the vagina and cervix. Common targets include bacterial vaginosis, yeast (Candida) and trichomonas; it can also be used with molecular tests to detect sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, and screening for group B streptococcus in pregnancy. Results come from microscopy, culture or PCR-based tests.

A swab culture test collects cells and microbes from a body site (throat, wound, ear, nose, genital or skin) to grow and identify bacteria or fungi causing infection. It determines the specific organism and antibiotic sensitivity, guiding targeted treatment, detecting resistant strains (e.g., MRSA), monitoring healing, and screening carriers. Results help clinicians choose effective antibiotics and infection-control measures.

If a swab test is positive, isolate immediately and avoid contact with others. Tell close contacts and follow local public health advice about isolation length. Monitor symptoms and seek medical care if you develop severe signs (difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion). Follow prescribed treatment or antiviral guidance from your clinician. Return to normal activities only after meeting public health clearance criteria.

A positive culture means microorganisms grew from the specimen. Your clinician will interpret it with symptoms to distinguish infection from colonization. Results usually list the organism and antibiotic susceptibilities; treatment may be started or adjusted to a targeted antibiotic. Additional tests, repeat cultures, and infection‑control measures may be needed. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice and complete prescribed therapy.

Signs of a uterine infection include lower abdominal or pelvic pain and uterine tenderness, fever or chills, abnormal vaginal discharge that may be foul-smelling, heavy or irregular bleeding, painful or difficult urination, painful intercourse, and general symptoms like malaise, nausea, or rapid heartbeat. Postpartum infections can cause worsening abdominal pain or delayed wound healing. Seek medical attention if these occur.
