You lie on the CT table with your wrist placed into the scanner and often immobilized with padding or a foam cradle. The technologist moves the table so the wrist passes through the gantry while X‑ray images are taken in seconds. There is no pain; stay still. Contrast is rarely needed for routine wrist CT. Images are reconstructed into thin slices and 3D views for radiologist review.

For wrist problems, MRI is generally better for evaluating soft tissues—ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bone‑marrow edema—and for unexplained wrist pain. CT is superior for detailed bone assessment, complex or displaced fractures, and preoperative planning. CT uses ionizing radiation; MRI avoids radiation but takes longer and may be contraindicated with some implants. Choice depends on the suspected injury.

A CT scan itself is usually painless. You may feel mild discomfort from lying still, tight space, or breathing instructions. If intravenous contrast dye is used, you might experience a brief warm or metallic taste, local burning at the injection site, or, rarely, an allergic reaction. IV insertion can cause minor pain. Serious complications are uncommon; discuss allergies and kidney issues with your clinician.

Start with plain X‑rays to detect fractures or arthritis. If X‑rays are normal but pain persists or ligament/TFCC injury is suspected, MRI is the best next test for soft‑tissue and occult bone injuries. CT is superior for complex fractures or preoperative bone detail. Ultrasound can evaluate tendons and dynamic problems.

A wrist CT is very quick. The actual scan usually takes 1–5 minutes (often under 10 minutes). Including registration, positioning and brief image checks, expect about 10–30 minutes at the radiology department. If intravenous contrast is required, add roughly 15–30 minutes for IV placement and observation. Follow any prep instructions your imaging center provides.

CT scans show bones and larger soft-tissue structures well but generally cannot directly visualize small peripheral nerves. They can reveal nerve-related problems indirectly — bone fractures, foraminal narrowing, masses, calcifications, or contrast-enhanced CT myelography highlighting nerve-root compression. CT is useful when MRI isn't available or contraindicated; MRI (including MR neurography) is preferred for detailed nerve imaging.
