A CT scan of the whole spine with contrast is a computed tomography study—X‑ray cross-sectional imaging—covering cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral levels while an iodine‑based contrast agent is given to enhance blood vessels and soft tissues. It improves detection of fractures, tumors, infection or epidural collections and inflammation. The test is fast but involves radiation and possible contrast allergy or kidney-related risks.

Contrast is not routinely required for CT of the spine when assessing bone trauma or fractures—noncontrast CT provides excellent bony detail. Intravenous contrast is used if infection, tumor, epidural abscess or vascular lesions are suspected. CT myelography (intrathecal contrast) evaluates nerve roots or canal compromise when MRI is contraindicated. The choice depends on the clinical question; discuss with the referring clinician.

A CT (computed tomography) scan for a toddler is a quick, noninvasive X‑ray test that creates detailed cross‑sectional images of the head, chest, abdomen, or bones. It helps diagnose injuries, infections, congenital anomalies, or internal bleeding. Toddlers may need short sedation to stay still; low radiation doses and protective measures are used and contrast dye is sometimes given. Physicians weigh benefits versus small radiation risks.

A CT myelogram is generally low risk. Common complications include a post‑lumbar puncture headache and mild local pain; less common risks are allergic reactions to iodinated contrast, infection, bleeding (especially if on blood thinners), nerve irritation, seizures or very rarely permanent nerve injury, and contrast‑related kidney effects and radiation exposure. Serious complications are uncommon—discuss allergies, anticoagulants, and pregnancy with your doctor beforehand.

A full-spine CT scan typically takes about 10–30 minutes in total at the scanner. The actual image acquisition is very quick—often under 5 minutes—while the rest of the time is used for positioning, technician checks, and IV contrast setup if needed. Including registration and any short post-contrast observation, expect to be at the imaging facility for roughly 15–45 minutes overall.

A CT scan can reliably show bony spine damage — fractures, vertebral alignment, bone fragments, and calcified disc material — and can reveal narrowing of the spinal canal from bone. It is less sensitive than MRI for soft-tissue injuries (spinal cord, ligaments, most herniated discs). CT myelography can improve nerve-root and canal visualization when MRI isn’t possible.
