It delineates spinal canal narrowing and bony causes of nerve compression but shows soft tissues and nerve roots less well than MRI; contrast-enhanced scans improve detection of infection or tumor.

A CT scan itself rarely causes a migraine. The ionizing radiation used doesn’t usually trigger immediate headaches. However, iodinated contrast given for some CTs can sometimes provoke headaches or trigger migraine in susceptible people.
