A skull CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of the skull bones and brain. It detects skull fractures, intracranial bleeding (acute hemorrhage), brain swelling, stroke-related changes, hydrocephalus, masses or tumors, calcifications, and foreign bodies. It also evaluates sinuses and bone lesions, helps guide diagnosis after head injury, and assesses ventricular size and mass effect.

Computed tomography (CT) is the best initial scan for the skull when assessing bone detail, fractures and acute head trauma or hemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is superior for soft‑tissue, brain, cranial nerves, base‑of‑skull lesions, infections and tumors. Choice depends on the clinical question: use CT for urgent trauma/bone evaluation, MRI for detailed soft‑tissue or chronic/neurological concerns.

A CT scan can rapidly detect many acute head problems: skull fractures, acute bleeding (intracranial hemorrhage), brain swelling, large strokes, hydrocephalus and major traumatic injuries. However CT is less sensitive than MRI for small tumors, subtle early ischemic changes, brainstem or posterior fossa lesions and some infections; contrast and follow-up MRI may be needed.

A CT head is a broader scan including skull, facial bones, sinuses and brain—used for trauma, fractures and acute bleeding—often with bone and brain windows. A CT brain focuses on intracranial soft tissues and parenchyma to assess stroke, tumors, hemorrhage or infection, using dedicated brain protocols and reconstructions. Protocols, field of view and contrast timing differ between the two.

CT is generally better for evaluating the skull itself—bone detail and acute fractures—because it’s fast and shows cortical bone clearly. MRI is superior for brain, soft‑tissue, marrow, and posterior fossa pathology, stroke, infection, or tumors. CT uses ionizing radiation; MRI takes longer and may be unsafe with some metal implants. Choice depends on the clinical question and urgency.

CT head costs vary widely. In India outpatient non‑contrast CTs commonly cost about ₹800–4,000. In the United States self‑pay prices typically range $300–3,000 (higher in hospitals, emergency care, or with contrast). In the UK scans are free under the NHS; private CTs usually cost about £200–£600. Final price depends on location, facility, contrast use, and urgency.
