CT Scan Scrotum with Contrast

A CT scan of the scrotum is a cross-sectional X‑ray imaging test that produces detailed images of the testes, epididymis, scrotal sac, and nearby tissues. It helps evaluate trauma, tumors, infections, and the spread into the pelvis or retroperitoneum. Intravenous contrast may be used. It’s fast and noninvasive but involves radiation and is used less often than ultrasound for acute scrotal problems.

Typical costs for a CT scan of the scrotum/pelvis vary widely. In India expect roughly ₹2,000–8,000 (higher with contrast). In the UK it’s free with a referral from public healthcare; privately it’s about £200–£800. In the US private prices typically range $300–$3,000, higher at hospitals or with contrast. High-frequency scrotal ultrasound with color Doppler is the best scan for scrotal evaluation. It’s non-invasive, radiation-free and provides detailed images of the testes, epididymis and scrotal contents while assessing blood flow to distinguish torsion from infection and to characterize masses. It’s the first-line investigation for acute pain, swelling or palpable lumps.

A urologist orders a CT scan with contrast to better visualize urinary tract anatomy and pathology: it enhances differentiation of tumors, stones, infections/abscesses, trauma, and vascular structures, helps detect and stage kidney or urinary tract cancers, evaluate unexplained hematuria, identify obstruction or leaking, and plan surgery or interventions by showing soft tissue detail and lymph node or metastatic spread.

A scrotal scan (ultrasound) is usually painless and non‑invasive. Gel and a probe are used; you may feel mild pressure. If the scrotum is tender, the probe can cause temporary discomfort or sharper pain. The test is quick, has no radiation, and complications are extremely rare. Tell the sonographer if you’re in pain or anxious so they can be gentle and explain steps.

A CT scan will not reliably show testicular torsion. Torsion is best diagnosed urgently with a color Doppler scrotal ultrasound, which assesses blood flow. CT may show nonspecific swelling but cannot evaluate perfusion well and is not recommended. If ultrasound is inconclusive but clinical suspicion remains high, immediate urological evaluation and surgical exploration are indicated.
