A dorsal spine CT scan is a computed tomography exam of the thoracic (dorsal) spine that uses X‑rays to produce detailed cross‑sectional images of vertebrae, discs, spinal canal and adjacent tissues. Scans are faster and more detailed than plain X‑rays; contrast may be used and there is exposure to ionizing radiation.

MRI is generally preferred for imaging nerve roots, spinal cord and soft tissues; electrophysiological tests (EMG/NCS) assess nerve function rather than structure.

Yes. CT scans are excellent at showing bony spine damage such as fractures, bone fragments, alignment changes, and degenerative bone changes, providing detailed cross‑sectional images useful for trauma assessment and surgical planning. They are less sensitive for soft‑tissue injuries (discs, spinal cord, nerves); MRI is preferred for those. CT myelography can evaluate nerve compression when MRI is contraindicated.
