A PNS CT scan is a computed tomography examination of the paranasal sinuses that produces detailed cross-sectional images of sinus cavities, nasal passages and surrounding bone. It helps diagnose sinusitis, chronic infections, nasal polyps, congenital anatomy variations, tumors and facial fractures, and is used for surgical planning. The test is fast and noninvasive but involves low-dose ionizing radiation; contrast is rarely required.

A CT PNS is usually very quick: the scanner captures images in seconds to a few minutes. Including patient positioning, instruction, and paperwork the full appointment typically lasts 10–30 minutes. The PNS test (paranasal sinuses X‑ray) images the sinus cavities to evaluate sinus disease and related problems. However, it cannot definitively distinguish benign from malignant disease and is less sensitive than MRI for soft‑tissue, intracranial/orbital extension and perineural spread. Tissue biopsy is required for diagnosis; contrast CT improves characterization.
