A PNS CT scan is a computed tomography study of the paranasal sinuses that produces detailed cross-sectional images of sinus cavities, nasal passages, bones and soft tissues. It helps diagnose sinusitis, polyps, tumors, anatomical variants, fractures, or plan sinus surgery. Noninvasive and quick, it gives greater detail than plain X-rays, involves low-dose radiation and may use contrast in select cases.

A PNS (paranasal sinuses) CT scan is generally painless and noninvasive. You lie still while the scanner takes images; most people feel no discomfort. If IV contrast is used, you may notice a brief warm sensation, metallic taste, or mild sting at the injection site. Some patients report anxiety or mild discomfort from lying flat or feeling enclosed, but the procedure itself isn’t painful.
