CT scan of the paranasal sinuses

A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses uses X‑rays to create detailed cross‑sectional images of the sinus cavities, nasal passages and surrounding bones. It detects sinusitis, polyps, fractures, tumors and anatomical variants, and guides surgical planning. The exam is quick, noninvasive and more sensitive than plain X‑rays; contrast dye is rarely needed and radiation exposure is low.

A CT PNS (computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses) provides detailed images of the sinus cavities and nearby bone and soft tissues. It’s used to diagnose acute or chronic sinusitis, identify blockages, polyps, tumors or fractures, map sinus anatomy before surgery, evaluate complications such as bone erosion or orbital extension, and guide treatment planning and surgical approaches.

Paranasal sinuses are normal air-filled skull cavities; sinus disease (sinusitis) ranges from mild, self-limiting inflammation or allergy to chronic infection. Most cases improve with saline, nasal steroids, and time; antibiotics or ENT referral may be needed for persistent or bacterial disease. Serious but rare complications include orbital infection, meningitis, brain abscess, or bone infection—seek urgent care for severe pain, high fever, vision change, swelling, or worsening symptoms.

An ENT orders a sinus CT to evaluate chronic or recurrent sinusitis, persistent symptoms after treatment, or complications (orbital or intracranial spread). CT defines sinus anatomy and ostiomeatal complex obstruction, detects polyps, fungal disease, tumors, or fractures, and guides preoperative planning for endoscopic sinus surgery. It helps target treatment and assess disease extent when endoscopy or plain X‑rays are insufficient.

Symptoms can include persistent nasal blockage on one side, frequent nosebleeds, and blood-stained or foul-smelling nasal discharge. Other signs include facial pain or numbness, swelling or loosened teeth, reduced sense of smell, headaches, visual changes (double or blurred vision), recurrent unilateral sinus infections, and an external lump or facial deformity. Any persistent, progressive, or one-sided symptoms need prompt medical evaluation.
