CT Scan Lower Abdomen

A lower abdomen CT scan (abdominopelvic CT) visualizes lower abdominal and pelvic organs and structures — intestines, appendix, bladder, reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, prostate), kidneys, blood vessels, lymph nodes, bones and surrounding soft tissues. It detects tumors, abscesses, inflammation, bowel obstruction or perforation, kidney/ureteral stones, and bleeding. Contrast may be used to better define vessels and lesions.

A CT scan of the lower abdomen and pelvis visualizes organs and structures such as the intestines, appendix, bladder, kidneys, ureters, reproductive organs, blood vessels, lymph nodes and pelvic bones. It helps detect appendicitis, bowel obstruction, kidney stones, infections, tumors, abscesses, internal bleeding and inflammatory conditions, and assists in treatment planning and surgical decisions.

An abdominal CT can detect primary and metastatic cancers in abdominal organs—liver (including metastases), pancreas, kidneys, adrenals and spleen—and tumors of the stomach, small bowel and colon. It also identifies ovarian masses, enlarged or malignant lymph nodes, retroperitoneal tumors and peritoneal carcinomatosis. CT helps stage disease, guide biopsy and monitor treatment response.

Serious CT findings are treated as urgent: radiologists prioritize and report them promptly, often within minutes to a few hours. Critical results are usually communicated directly to the treating clinician by phone, pager, or electronic alert and documented. Exact timing depends on hospital workflow, radiologist availability and imaging volume, but urgent abnormalities are acted on immediately rather than waiting for routine reporting.
