A CT scan of the wrist is a fast, noninvasive X‑ray test that creates detailed cross‑sectional and 3D images of wrist bones, joints and nearby soft tissues. It’s used to detect complex fractures, bone and joint problems, infections, tumors, or guide surgical planning. The scan takes minutes, may use contrast for better detail, and involves low‑dose radiation exposure.

A wrist CT scan typically takes about 10–30 minutes in total. The actual image acquisition is very fast—often less than a minute to a few minutes—while the rest of the time is for check‑in, positioning, and brief instructions. If contrast, extra views, or radiologist review are needed, expect the appointment to extend to around 30–45 minutes.

CT scans cannot directly detect pain because pain is a subjective sensation. They image anatomy and can reveal causes that produce pain—fractures, bleeding, infections, tumors, or inflammation—helping clinicians link structure to symptoms. Diagnosis combines clinical history, exam, labs and imaging; other tests (MRI, ultrasound, nerve studies, functional imaging) may be used when CT is insufficient.

CT images are usually displayed as if you’re looking up from the patient’s feet: the patient’s left appears on the viewer’s right (and the patient’s right on the viewer’s left). Most scans include L/R markers and DICOM metadata to confirm sides. Always verify the labeled marker or radiology report, since reformats or mirroring can alter appearance.

For suspected wrist fractures, CT is better for detailed bone visualization, complex or displaced fractures and surgical planning. MRI is superior for soft‑tissue evaluation—ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone marrow edema and occult fractures—without radiation. CT is faster and excellent for cortical detail; MRI is preferred for unexplained chronic pain, instability or suspected soft‑tissue injury. Choice depends on the clinical question and physician guidance.

A CT scan is usually painless and quick, but some people find it uncomfortable. You lie still on a table that slides through a doughnut-shaped scanner, which can feel cramped or cause anxiety. Contrast dye (IV) may cause a warm flushing sensation, metallic taste, or brief discomfort at the injection site. Remaining still can be uncomfortable for those with pain.
