A foot CT scan provides detailed cross-sectional images of bones and joints, showing fractures (including complex or hairline breaks), bone alignment, small bone fragments, joint dislocations, degenerative arthritis, bone infections or lesions, and tumors. It can detect calcified or radio‑opaque foreign bodies and assess bone healing. Soft-tissue detail is limited compared with MRI, but swelling and gross abnormalities may be visible.

A CT scan of the left leg is an imaging test that uses X-rays and computer processing to produce cross‑sectional pictures of bones, joints, muscles, blood vessels and soft tissues. It helps detect fractures, bone lesions, infections, tumors, or vascular problems, and guides surgery or interventions. Scans are quick; sometimes contrast dye is used to highlight blood vessels and soft‑tissue detail.

MRI is generally better for soft-tissue problems in the foot—ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone marrow edema, and many infections—without ionizing radiation. CT is superior for detailed cortical bone visualization, subtle or complex fractures, and surgical planning. Choice depends on the clinical question: MRI for soft-tissue or marrow pathology; CT for precise bone assessment or when MRI is contraindicated.

For a CT of the foot the patient usually lies supine on the CT table and is positioned foot‑first into the gantry. The affected foot is centered with the ankle in a neutral (about 90°) position, toes pointing upward, and supported with foam or straps to prevent motion. Shoes and jewelry are removed; the patient must remain still for clear images.

A foot CT scan typically takes about 10–30 minutes from arrival to finish. The actual image acquisition is very fast—often under a minute to a few minutes—while preparation, positioning and technologist checks add most of the time. If contrast isn’t needed you can usually leave immediately; contrast procedures or busy departments may extend the visit slightly.

A CT scan can detect many structural problems — fractures, internal bleeding, tumors, lung disease, infections, kidney stones and vascular issues (with contrast). It’s excellent for acute injury and emergency diagnosis. Limitations: it may miss very small lesions, early stroke or subtle soft‑tissue abnormalities better seen on MRI, and it involves ionizing radiation and occasional contrast risks.
