A contrast CT scan of the kidneys is a computed tomography exam performed after injecting iodine-based contrast into a vein to highlight renal anatomy and blood vessels. It helps detect stones, tumors, infections, traumatic injury, blockages and vascular problems. The scan takes minutes but requires pre-check of kidney function to reduce risk of contrast reaction or worsening renal impairment; hydration and allergy history are reviewed first.

Before a KUB CT scan: follow the imaging center’s instructions—usually arrive with an empty bladder (or as directed), remove jewelry and metal, wear loose clothing, and bring ID and prior scans. If contrast will be used, fast 4–6 hours, inform staff about pregnancy, allergies, kidney disease, and all medications (especially metformin). Drink water unless told to fast and arrive early.

Most CT KUB scans (non‑contrast, done for kidney stones) do not require fasting — you can eat and drink unless told otherwise.
