A knee CT scan provides detailed images of bone and joint structures, revealing fractures (including complex or displaced fragments), bone alignment, degenerative changes (bone spurs, joint space narrowing), osteoarthritis severity, bone tumors or infections, and calcifications or loose fragments. It’s useful for surgical planning and assessing healing. CT shows limited soft-tissue detail compared with MRI but may detect joint effusion or calcified ligaments.

An MRI is generally better for knee soft tissues—ligaments, tendons, menisci and cartilage—and avoids radiation. A CT scan gives superior bone detail and is preferred for complex fractures, surgical planning, or when MRI is contraindicated (e.g., certain metal implants). The best choice depends on the suspected injury and clinical question; your doctor will recommend the appropriate scan.

Costs vary widely. In India a knee CT typically costs about ₹1,500–₹7,000 in private centres. In the United States expect roughly $300–$3,000 depending on facility, insurance, and use of contrast. In the UK CTs are provided free on the NHS when clinically indicated; private scans usually run about £150–£700. Final price depends on location, facility and any added services.

A standard CT scan is excellent for bones but limited for visualizing ligaments. MRI is the preferred test for detecting ligament tears because it images soft tissues directly. CT can show indirect signs (bone avulsion) and, with CT arthrography or specialized protocols, may delineate some ligament injuries, but it’s generally less sensitive and specific than MRI.

MRI is generally the best scan for most knee problems because it shows soft tissues—menisci, ligaments, cartilage—and bone marrow changes without radiation. Plain X-ray is first-line for fractures and arthritis. CT helps with complex bony detail, and ultrasound assesses superficial tendons and fluid.
