A CT IVP is usually not painful. You may feel a brief pinch when the IV is placed and a short warm flushing or metallic taste during contrast injection; some people experience mild nausea or anxiety. The scan itself is painless, though claustrophobia can cause discomfort. Rarely, contrast can leak at the IV site or trigger an allergic reaction — report severe pain, swelling, or breathing difficulty immediately.

An IVP CT (CT intravenous pyelogram) is a contrast-enhanced CT exam to evaluate kidneys, ureters and bladder. The protocol typically uses a non-contrast scan for stones, then timed contrast phases—corticomedullary, nephrographic and delayed/excretory—to show perfusion and urinary excretion. It detects stones, obstruction and tumors; it requires IV contrast and involves radiation and contrast/allergy or kidney-function risks.

Before a CT IVP: you may need a recent blood test to check kidney function (creatinine/GFR). Follow fasting instructions (usually 4–6 hours), drink clear fluids unless told otherwise, and arrive well hydrated. Tell staff about allergies, prior contrast reactions, pregnancy, and all medications—metformin often needs pausing. You may receive steroid/antihistamine premedication if allergic. Remove jewelry and follow center instructions on bladder filling.

CT scanning is generally superior to IVP for evaluating the urinary tract: it’s faster, far more sensitive for stones and tumors, provides cross‑sectional detail and detects alternative diagnoses. IVP is older, less sensitive, and largely replaced except where CT is unavailable or contrast/radiation must be minimized. CT has higher radiation and contrast‑related risks, so choice depends on clinical need and patient factors.

CT IVP uses iodinated contrast and can cause mild effects—nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, warmth or flushing at injection, and local injection-site pain. Allergic reactions range from itching and rash to rare severe anaphylaxis with breathing difficulty, hypotension, or shock. Contrast can also rarely damage kidneys (contrast-induced nephropathy) and cause extravasation with swelling and pain at the injection site.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting, two-piece clothing so you can easily expose your lower abdomen. Avoid tight waistbands, belts, or multiple layers; skirts or pants you can lower to the pelvic area are ideal. Dresses or jumpsuits are less convenient. You may be asked to lift clothing or briefly lower/remove underwear, so choose garments that allow quick, modest access.
