A CT intravenous pyelogram is a contrast-enhanced CT scan of the urinary tract performed after IV injection of iodinated dye. It produces detailed cross-sectional images of kidneys, ureters and bladder to detect stones, obstruction, tumors, or causes of blood in the urine. The exam uses timed imaging phases, requires adequate kidney function, and carries small risks of radiation and contrast reactions.

A CT scan is a general cross‑sectional X‑ray study done with or without contrast to evaluate bones, organs and vessels. A CT IVP (intravenous pyelogram) specifically uses IV contrast timed to visualize the urinary tract—kidneys, ureters and bladder—to detect stones, obstruction, tumors or bleeding. It requires contrast injection and carries risks like allergic reaction and kidney impairment.

An IVP protocol CT scan (CT urography) is a multi‑phase CT of the urinary tract using intravenous iodinated contrast. It combines a non‑contrast scan (for stones) with timed post‑contrast phases—corticomedullary/nephrographic and a delayed excretory phase—to evaluate kidneys, ureters and bladder for stones, obstruction, masses or hematuria. Preparation includes kidney‑function assessment; risks include contrast allergy and contrast‑induced nephropathy.

Common side effects: mild nausea, metallic taste, warmth or flushing, injection-site pain or bruising. Allergic reactions range from mild rash and itching to rare severe anaphylaxis. Contrast can rarely damage kidneys (contrast‑induced nephropathy), especially with preexisting kidney disease, and may affect thyroid function. Other rare risks: contrast extravasation, headache, dizziness, and radiation exposure; discuss allergies, kidney disease, and pregnancy with your provider.

Most people find a CT IVP only mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. You may feel a brief pinprick from IV placement and a warm flushing or metallic taste when the contrast is injected. Rarely, injection leaks (extravasation) or allergic reactions cause pain or swelling. The injection is quick; staff monitor you and manage any reactions promptly. Inform staff of kidney problems or allergies beforehand.

A kidney biopsy is a procedure that removes a small tissue sample from the kidney for microscopic examination. It helps diagnose causes of kidney disease, assess damage, guide treatment, and monitor transplant rejection. Performed using a needle under local anaesthesia and imaging (ultrasound/CT). Risks include bleeding, pain, infection and, rarely, loss of kidney function; recovery involves bed rest and avoiding heavy lifting for several days.
