Yes — a high-resolution CT scan of the temporal bones can show inner ear bony anatomy and problems (congenital malformations, fractures, otosclerosis, bony erosion from cholesteatoma). However, CT is limited for soft-tissue and nerve conditions (labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, inner-ear fluid changes, vestibular schwannoma); MRI is preferred for those. Your clinician will choose imaging based on the suspected issue.

A CT scan of the ear (temporal bone CT) gives detailed images of the bony anatomy: middle and inner ear, ossicles, cochlea, semicircular canals, mastoid air cells, otic capsule and facial nerve canal. It identifies fractures, congenital anomalies, bone changes from otosclerosis, cholesteatoma-related erosions, and middle-ear/mastoid soft tissue or fluid, and is used for surgical planning. It is less sensitive for soft-tissue detail than MRI.

High-resolution CT is complementary when detailed bony anatomy of the temporal bone or ossicles is required, such as congenital malformations or fractures. Choice depends on suspected soft-tissue versus bony pathology and clinical context.

Symptoms of an ear tumor can include persistent ear pain, hearing loss, a feeling of fullness, ringing (tinnitus), abnormal ear discharge (sometimes bloody), a visible mass in the ear canal, bleeding, dizziness or vertigo, facial weakness or numbness, and swollen lymph nodes behind the ear or neck. Recurrent or unhealed symptoms warrant prompt ENT evaluation.
